Hannah and her Grandparents went to DC to do genealogy at the National Archives. There was a long line going around the block so we decided to see the Archive displays first. Loren dropped us off to stand in line and went to find a parking place. (ever try to find a parking place in DC) We all finally went in and I was surprised at the changes since we were here 10 years ago. It is much darker inside. They are trying very hard to save and protect the great documents of our country. We were told that for years the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were just hanging on the walls in Federal buildings. I guess the sun got to them because these copies are very hard to read. Due to the fact that this is an election year they had a display of political cartoons. When we finally got to the research area we were told that Hannah could not go in because she didn't have student id with her. Loren and I looked around for about 30 minutes while Hannah texted her friends from the foyer. The strange part was: We thought the archives would have some documents we couldn't get anywhere else. When we walked in and asked for help they directed us to the computers and told us to look up ancestry.com. this internet site is based in Orem and we have had a subscription to it for years. After lunch we went to the capitol building and walked around.

July 5, 2008 Today we are relaxing, going to church and playing with grandkids. The country here in Virginia is beautiful. There are lots of trees and rolling hills. So many people live in this area around Washington DC that there is not enough land to build single family houses. Most of the people live in condos and townhomes.

We are on our way.

July 4, 2008 Independence Day. What an exciting day to be going to our Nation's Capitol, Washington D.C. My husband, Loren and granddaughter, Hannah and I are starting a trip that will last two weeks. Loren and I have been to D.C. and we are excited to show Hannah our favorite places. My son, Loren, is in Pakistan but we are going to see his wife and 5 children. They live in Virginia, about an hour away from DC.

WE DIDN'T GET LOST! Every time we try to get to Loren's house from the airport we get lost. This time we actually followed the directions and found our way. Maybe that was because Laura gave us directions instead of our son. The kids looks great. They were waiting for us so we could get started with family fireworks. After front yard fireworks we drove to another town to watch the big ones.

DID YOU KNOW?

Independence Day is celebrated on July 4 because that is the day when the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence. From July 8, 1776, until the next month, the document was read publicly and people celebrated whenever they heard it. The next year, in Philadelphia, bells rang and ships fired guns, candles and firecrackers were lighted. But the War of Independence dragged on until 1783, and in that year, Independence Day was made an official holiday. 1941 Congress declared 4th of July a federal holiday.
